Boxer describes the horizontally opposed cylinder layout; D-4S is Toyota’s combined direct and port injection system. The GT86 is a light, rear-wheel-drive coupe developed jointly with Subaru.
What to check on this specification
Euro 5 on a petrol car
The distinction matters. London’s ULEZ requires petrol cars to meet Euro 4 and diesel cars to meet Euro 6, so a Euro 5 petrol is comfortably compliant while a Euro 5 diesel is not. Confirm against the registration on the TfL checker, but this is not the concern it would be on a diesel of the same age.
How it has been driven
A light rear-wheel-drive coupe attracts enthusiastic ownership and, in some cases, track and drift use. That is not automatically a problem, but look for the evidence: uneven tyre wear across the rear axle, brake discs with a pronounced lip, roll-cage or harness mounting holes, aftermarket suspension, and a differential or gearbox that whines. Direct injection and carbon
Engines with direct injection can accumulate carbon on the inlet valves over time because fuel no longer washes them. The D-4S system’s port injectors mitigate this, but a rough idle or a misfire under load is still worth investigating rather than dismissing.
The automatic gearbox
Drive it from cold and then again warm. What you are looking for is a clean pull away in first, a clean engagement of reverse, and shifts that are firm rather than jerky, slurred or accompanied by a thump. Torque-converter and dual-clutch boxes both have scheduled oil and filter changes; those services are frequently skipped because nothing obviously breaks when they are, and the bill when something does break is one of the largest in used-car ownership.
Ownership notes
Toyota ranks highly among manufacturers in owner reliability surveys, and the GT86’s mechanical package is conventional and well understood. The variables are how the individual car has been used and whether the servicing kept pace with that use.
Read the whole MOT history before travelling. On a car of this type the advisory notes are more informative than the mileage.
