What to check on this specification
Timing chain
The timing chain is the fault MINI is best known for on the used market. Buying guides describe the Cooper S of the late 2000s and early 2010s as prone to throwing its chain, particularly before a revised tensioner was introduced, with the plastic tensioner guide as the culprit and a brushing or rattling noise from cold as the warning. The advice is unambiguous: if you hear it, deal with it rather than driving on.
That is a specific generation and a specific engine, and this car may not be one of them, but the check costs nothing. Start it from stone cold and listen.
The automatic gearbox
Drive it from cold and then again warm. What you are looking for is a clean pull away in first, a clean engagement of reverse, and shifts that are firm rather than jerky, slurred or accompanied by a thump. Torque-converter and dual-clutch boxes both have scheduled oil and filter changes; those services are frequently skipped because nothing obviously breaks when they are, and the bill when something does break is one of the largest in used-car ownership.
A performance derivative on four-wheel drive
Two consequences. First, tyres must be a matched set across the car, not just across an axle: mismatched rolling circumferences load the four-wheel-drive hardware. Second, a car sold on its performance has usually been driven on it. Look for a pronounced lip at the outer edge of the brake discs, uneven tyre wear that points at geometry rather than style, and evidence of track use.
Electronics
Owner surveys of the Countryman of this period report infotainment and electrical niggles as the most common complaints. Work through the screen, the connectivity and the driver-assistance functions on the viewing.

A Euro 6 petrol comfortably clears the Euro 4 standard for the London ULEZ.
