MINI’s range runs from the three- and five-door Hatch through the Clubman estate to the Countryman SUV. Cooper denotes the mid-output engine, Cooper S the more powerful one, Cooper SD the higher-output diesel, and John Cooper Works the performance division. ALL4 is four-wheel drive.

The timing chain

This is the fault the marque is best known for. Buying guides describe the Cooper S of the late 2000s and early 2010s as prone to throwing its timing chain, particularly before a revised tensioner was introduced, with the plastic tensioner guide as the culprit. The warning is a brushing or rattling noise from cold, and the advice is to act on it immediately rather than drive on. Start any MINI from stone cold and listen.

Oil consumption and leaks

Buying guides note that these engines use oil — meaningfully so on some units — and that leaks appear as the cars age. Check the level, look under the car after it has been parked, and inspect the underside of the engine for staining.

Shared BMW hardware, shared recalls

MINI uses BMW engines and much of its electronics. A DVSA recall round-up covering exhaust gas recirculation cooler leaks named tens of thousands of BMW and MINI vehicles together, which is a reminder that a small car is not outside the large recall actions. Check the registration.

Suspension and clutches

Front wishbone bushes work hard on these cars and are a common wear item. On manual cars, buying guides report clutch failure at low mileages as not unusual; on automatics, harsh shifting can point at a valve body. Drive the car properly before deciding.
