D240 is Land Rover’s badge for the higher-output twin-turbocharged version of the 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel. The Velar sits between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport.
What to check on this specification
The Ingenium four-cylinder diesel
Jaguar Land Rover’s own 2.0-litre diesel is the engine in this car, and it has a documented weakness. Used-car reviewers advise checking the service history carefully on four-cylinder JLR diesels because the timing chain is known to give trouble where servicing has been stretched, and they link the problem to oil condition: incomplete particulate-filter regenerations dilute the oil with fuel, long intervals leave it in place, and the chain and its guides wear early as a result.
That makes two checks non-negotiable. Start the engine from stone cold and listen for a rattle in the first seconds. Then read the service record for oil changes — frequency matters more here than the total mileage does.
The particulate filter
Every diesel of this era leaves the factory with a diesel particulate filter. Two things follow from that. First, a filter that was fitted when the vehicle was built and is missing at test time is an MOT failure, and removing one will normally put the vehicle outside the emissions standard it was type-approved to — which makes it unlawful to use on the road. Second, a filter only clears itself properly on a run long and hot enough to complete a regeneration; a car used for short cold journeys accumulates soot and, worse, fuel in the sump from interrupted regenerations.
On a viewing this shows up in the paperwork rather than the metal. Look for oil changes at or before the stated interval, and be wary of a car whose recorded mileage is made up of very short annual totals.
Electrics
Owner surveys of Land Rover models from this period report electrical faults as the leading complaint — engine and emissions warning lights, infotainment, keyless entry, air conditioning. Work through every function on the viewing. Individually these are small; in combination they are the reason these vehicles have the reliability reputation they do.
The Velar’s interior electronics
This model leans heavily on touchscreens for functions that are physical switches elsewhere, including climate control. That concentrates a lot of the car’s usability in modules that are expensive to replace, so test every screen function and note any lag, blank panels or failed touch zones.

Euro 6 means the vehicle meets the diesel standard for the London ULEZ and the charging clean air zones in England.
